Specifying Outdoor Pedestrian Access Control for Unsheltered Sites and Harsh Climates

Most access control projects are designed indoors and then forced outdoors. A canopy gets added late in the schedule, an IP rating is assumed rather than verified, and eighteen months later the site manager is filing service tickets after every storm. The gate was never the problem. The specification was.

Evolve (Shenzhen) Autogate Co., Ltd. builds entrance control hardware for the environments that break lesser products — coastal car parks, stadium concourses, transport interchanges, industrial compounds and border halls. This article sets out what overseas distributors and system integrators should look for when the installation point has no roof over it.

Why Outdoor Access Control Fails on Paper Before It Fails on Site

An indoor speed gate is engineered around a controlled envelope: stable temperature, no standing water, no crosswind load on the barrier arms. Move that same unit to an exposed kerb line and three things change at once. Water ingress attacks the drive mechanism and controller. Wind load acts on the barrier surface and stresses the arm fixings. Debris and surface water interfere with the infrared detection array, producing false reopens or, worse, false closures.

The commercial consequence is predictable. A gate that reopens on every gust destroys throughput. A gate that trips on standing water destroys confidence in the whole security layer. Buyers rarely blame the specification — they blame the brand on the cabinet.

ES200: A Speed Gate Rated for Direct Outdoor Installation

The ES200 is the clearest expression of that design philosophy. Distinct from standard indoor systems, it is rated for direct outdoor installation without requiring a shelter. A canopy remains advisable in high-traffic zones to improve user comfort, but it is not a structural prerequisite.

Two engineering details carry the rating. First, the barrier arms are produced in robust stainless steel or PMMA and are precision-patterned to reduce wind resistance — the arm sheds gust load instead of absorbing it, which protects both the mechanism and the structural stability of the cabinet. Second, the unit is rated to operate reliably in up to 150mm of standing water, covering the drained-but-flooded conditions that appear at site entrances after heavy rainfall.

Physically, the ES200 is a slim stainless cabinet at L1600 × W200 × H1020mm with a passage speed above 25 people per minute and a single-phase 110–220 VAC (+10%) 50/60 Hz supply. In the product imagery the cabinets read as brushed stainless with vertical glass inlays and a slim LED status strip along the leading edge — an aesthetic that holds up on a business park forecourt rather than looking like a bolted-on industrial afterthought.

Integration is native: card readers, biometric devices and wider access control ecosystems connect without bespoke engineering, which keeps the installed cost predictable and the maintenance regime light.

Full-Height Turnstiles: Perimeter Integrity Where Fencing Is Not Enough

Some sites need more than a barrier — they need physical and visual deterrence against climbing, tailgating and reverse entry. The full-height range covers that requirement across four platforms.

The FT120 series uses a rounded stainless steel body in single (FT120S, Ø1600 × H2300mm) and dual-lane (FT120D, L2400 × W1600 × H2300mm) configurations. The FT120M variant brings the same architecture to L1500 × W1360 × H2300mm (single) and L2250 × W1360 × H2300mm (dual), rated for both indoor and outdoor operation. The dual-lane models place twin passageways inside a unitary frame — the practical benefit is that throughput roughly doubles without expanding the perimeter footprint, which matters when the lobby wall is already fixed.

The FT90M is built from heavy-gauge carbon steel into a monolithic full-height architecture, aimed at data centres, utilities and national infrastructure. It is offered as FT90M-S (L1500 × W1210 × H2300mm) and FT90M-D (L2250 × W1360 × H2300mm).

The FT180M (L1500 × W1160 × H2300mm) addresses a detail that catches distributors out on site: a widened passage that accepts goods trolleys and bicycles without extra floor space, with flexible access permission configuration and a low failure rate.

All four run above 25 people per minute, integrate with biometric, RFID and PIN authentication, and support configurable fail-safe or fail-secure behaviour. In the supplied photography, the round full-height units read as a glass-and-stainless drum with segmented rotor blades and vertical LED indicators — visually lighter than a steel cage while still closing the full height of the opening.

Security Portals: When One Person Must Mean One Person

For banks, embassies, correctional facilities, jewellers and high-value protection zones, the risk is piggybacking — two bodies on one credential. Evolve's interlocking door portals answer it with floor-integrated load cell detection at a 200 g threshold, delivering three functions: anti-piggybacking and anti-holdup protocols that lock the inner door on multi-occupancy, abandoned object detection that halts transit for items above 200 g, and single-occupancy verification that negates tailgating.

The CO135 (L1050 × W1050 × H2400mm) is the square-base classic. The CO136 (Ø1050 × H2400mm) is the compact round-base unit, optimised for tight spaces and parallel deployment of two to four banks. The CO138 (Ø1500 × H2400mm) is the panorama cylinder — a fully demountable modular structure for rapid on-site assembly, with a certified 900mm clear passage for DDA compliance.

All three specify 26/27mm BR3/S ballistic and P6B anti-intrusion laminated glazing, embossed finish in RAL colour or stainless steel cladding, indoor environment rating, and a Class 2 isolating transformer at 230/24 V AC. Operation is autonomous and unattended, with multilingual voice prompts, ceiling illumination, bidirectional signalling, archived audit logs, and three configurable modes: daytime bidirectional transit, nocturnal one-way lockdown, and emergency egress. Optional biometric and metal detection modules add further layers.

A Portfolio That Covers the Whole Building Line

Outdoor is one requirement; the rest of the project still needs specifying. Speed gates span the PG127 (L1400 × W127 × H960mm) through PG150, PG200, PG300 and the ultra-slim PG500 (L1600 × W100 × H980mm, with 600mm standard, 900mm accessible and 1200mm wide lane options). Retractable gates — RG Retail, RG100 and RG200 — run above 20 to 30 people per minute with automatic obstacle retraction on power failure and fire alarm interface. Swing gates SG100 and SG Retail deliver clear openings up to 1800mm and encoder-driven loss prevention. The TT301 tripod turnstile is compliant with BS EN 17352:2022 with a fail-safe drop-arm that self-resets once power or the alarm clears. Self-service facial gates APG300-A and APG300-AB cover border control, the AB variant using a strict one-gate-open, one-gate-closed interlock for closed-loop inspection.

Company Capability Behind the Hardware

Evolve Security Products Limited is part of a specialist group formed to deliver design, manufacture, supply, installation support and service for pedestrian entrance control. Founded in 2012, the company distributes exclusively through approved distributors and system integration partners worldwide, with manufacturing at strategically located facilities under stringent quality control procedures. Every product is designed to complement modern architecture, meet international manufacturing standards, simplify installation and servicing, combine function with contemporary aesthetics, and remain affordable at project scale.

What Distributors Should Ask Before Quoting

Three questions separate a workable outdoor specification from a warranty claim. Is the unit rated for direct outdoor installation, or is a shelter assumed? What standing-water depth and wind condition is the barrier arm engineered for? And does the controller accept third-party readers, biometrics and fire alarm interfaces without custom work? The ES200, the FT series and the portal range are built so those answers are already yes.

If you are pricing an unsheltered entrance, a high-security perimeter or a border hall upgrade, send the site conditions and lane count. Evolve supports distributors and integrators from specification through commissioning, with product documentation and imagery ready for tender submissions.
